Nigeria to booster vaccination next week to curtail Omicron variants

The federal government of Nigeria to booster vaccination next week following the confirmation of the country's first Omicron variants one of which where from in by travellers from South Africa, a senior revealed.


Faisal Shuaib, executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said booster shots will be available from Dec. 10 to those that have been fully vaccinated. Only 2.9% of Nigerians eligible to get vaccines have been inoculated so far.

The country confirmed the new variant this week just few days after Canada revealed that a case was brought in by two arriving travellers from Nigeria.

The Buhari led government plans a massive campaign aim at half of its target population by the end of January to reach herd immunity.

Shuaib said booster shots will be available for those that have "completed two doses of AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech or one dose of Johnson & Johnson."

Several nations have imposed travel curbs on countries in southern Africa, while Hong Kong and Canada have barred non-resident travelers from Nigeria. South Korea said it detected the Omicron variant in fully vaccinated travelers who arrived last week from Nigeria.

First reported in southern Africa a week ago, Omicron - the mutated and highly contagious coronavirus variant - is now spreading across borders as nations struggle to curtail its spread.

More than 20 nations including the United States of America and many African countries have imposed travel ban on travellers from South Africa where the latest variant is believed to have emanated.
