Covid-19: AstraZeneca to supply nine million doses by March.

The European Union has revealed that one of the world Covid-19 vaccine leading producer, AstraZeneca is ready to supply additional nine million doses of the vaccines by March.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was a "step forward".

The firm had cast doubt over the possibility of meeting demand which has attracted criticisms over the weeks.

Having hoped and reportedly contracted for the supply of 80 million doses, the company reportedly feared it will not be able to supply up to 50%, as a result of the problem arising from its Dutch and Belgian plants.

The EU was angered by the claim that Britain was getting its UK-made contracted supplies from AstraZeneca while the union's members suffered a shortfall.

As part of effort to meet demands, the union wants the company's UK plant to help add to those intended for the union but was staunchly opposed by the UK.

The EU approved the vaccine on Friday, after the UK became the first country in the world to do last week Friday.

In the new development, the pharmaceutical company now seem to have taken a u-turn, as it has agreed to increased distribution to EU by nine million doses.

Making the announcement on Sunday, Ms Von Der Leyen said she had had a video-conference with vaccine manufacturers.

According to her, EU was maintaining its "target of vaccinating 70% of adults by the end of summer".

Speaking with German public broadcaster ZDF, Ms Von Der Leyen said, "Our opponent is the virus and the pharmaceutical industry is part of the solution."
