Covid-19: vaccine manufacturing giants face pressure from consumers

Two of world pharmaceutical giants, Pfizer and AstraZeneca are both facing pressure over vaccine amount and delay in delivery.

The European Union are already calling on the two companies to hasten up vaccine delivery as the pandemic continue to rise rapidly. In fact, officials have started thinking of bringing legal action and to introduce export controls on doses produced in the bloc.

The union last week revealed its rollout plan is likely to suffer setback, as AstraZeneca revealed his inability to supply as many doses as earlier promised.

This was coming after American Pharmaceutical company, Pfizer had revealed last week that he had supplied less than budgeted.

Among those fuming at the delay is EU's health commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, who expressed disappointment with AstraZeneca. She said the company "intends to supply considerably fewer doses in the coming weeks than agreed and announced."

Also, President Ursula von der Leyen turned up the heat on the pharmaceutical companies on Tuesday, saying the bloc "means business."

"Europe invested billions to help develop the world's first Covid-19 vaccines, to create a truly global common good. And now the companies must deliver. They must honor their obligations," she said during a virtual meeting of the World Economic Forum.

Much concern have not surrounded supply from Pfizer as much as that of AstraZeneca as the former is expected to increase production in coming days.

However, AstraZeneca's vaccine is seen as more reliable and easily distributable because it can be stored at higher temperature.
