Covid-19: USA death toll surpasses 800,000

More than 800,000 Americans have now died from the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, a record deaths to the disease by any nation

Most of the deaths in the country came among the unvaccinated and elders who had prevailing health issues.

It comes as the country on Monday confirmed that the cases has reached over 50 million after over 110,000 and 115,000 cases were recorded on Sunday and Monday respectively.

The addition 100,000 deaths came in the past 11 weeks - the quickest by any nation since the disease was discovered in 2019.

 

Dr Keri Althoff, an epidemiologist at the University of John Hopkins Bloomberg School Of Public Health, said the wave is likely to continue except high immunisation rate is achieved.

"The wave of illness that we're seeing will continue until the population-level immunity is high enough to prevent. Quite simply, we're not there yet." he said.

Covid-19 continues to spread across the world with over 270 million cases confirmed and 5 million death already accounted for.

Brasil is the second most affected country with over 610,000 death, followed by India where the disease has killed over 475,000 people.
