Adverse effects of brushing after eating

Brushing one's teeth immediately after eating is a diehard practice among some people who deem it necessary to keep the mouth refreshing and against germs arising from leftover food in the mouth.

However, brushing teeth after eating may have adverse effects on teeth, gum and generally the mouth if not done properly.

Calcium is a key ingredient in building strong teeth. Unfortunately, exposing your teeth to acid can leach calcium from your enamel, causing this protective surface to break down.

Apart from eating junks which wears down the calcium in the teeth, it is believed that some tooth softening acids are produced immediately after meal.

This acid is said to be common after consumption of food containing citric acid like oranges, lemon and grapefruits.

Brushing teeth immediately after eating these foods is much likely to damage the soften teeth which is easily torn off by the toothbrush, especially stronger toothbrush.

That is why most medical experts would advise you against immediate brushing after eating. They would rather advise you to wait for at least 30 minutes after eating before dental cleanup.

You are therefore advised to have at least 30 minutes break after meal before brushing your teeth. Taking water after meal before brushing is helpful in washing down acid produced during eating.
