Nigeria, ten others to be removed from UK's red list

The United Kingdom on Tuesday announced that all eleven African countries placed on its red list as a result of the Omicron virus would be remove on Wednesday.


Transport Secretary Grant Shapps on Tuesday made this announcement on his twitter page.

He, however, revealed that all testing measures put in place for arrivals will remain in place.

The England's rules require all travellers to have a pre-arrival negative PCR or lateral flow test taken within the 48 hours before arriving.

Arrivals must also self-isolate until they get a negative result from a PCR test. 

Making the announcement, Shapps wrote, "Travel ban update. From 4am on Weds 15 Dec, ALL 11 countries will be removed from England's travel red list"

He added that the country will keep reviewing it restriction and would be imposed if necessary.

"As always, we keep all our travel measures under review and we may impose new restrictions should there be a need to do so to protect public health," he added.

Earlier this month, following the discovery of Omicron in South Africa, the UK placed eleven African countries on red list, meaning travellers from these countries will be we not be allowed into the would not be allowed into the UK as they are deemed high risk of the infection.

The countries include Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe all of which will be removed from the list at 4am on Wednesday morning. 

The secretary did not reveal the reason for the latest decision which may be due to the pressure from affected countries who had criticized the moved to be placed on red list
