Covid-19: 1,305 new cases confirmed on Chrismas day - NCDC

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, on Saturday, 25 Dec, recorded 1,305 new cases of the deadly covid-19 in the country, the agency announces on its website.


The country which announced last week that it is in the third wave of the virus, on Chrismas day recorded staggery 1305 news cases with 21 deaths which is believed to be as a result of the gathering arising from the preparation for the most celebrated day of the year.

Consequently, more cases are expected to follow the Chrismas day celebration as more people are seen gathering at various event centers, bars and restaurants across the country without strict adherence to covid-19 measures, especially the social distancing rule.

Lagos which remain the epicenter of the virus on Saturday recorded 705 cases, accounting for more than half of the tootal new cases across the country.

Oyo State which followed Lagos State on Saturday recorded 234 cases followed by Ondo, Kaduna, Rivers, Ogun, Anambra State recording 88, 79, 78, 30 and 25 cases respectively.

Others includes Kano (24), Enugu (12), Ekiti (11), Jigawa (6), Osun (6), Plateau (6) and Zamfara (1).

The total cases in the country stands at 236,041 with 212,357 discharged persons and 3,014 death, leaving 20,643 cases currently active across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Meanwhile, some cabinet members of President Muhammadu Buhari have reportedly tested positive for covid-19 leading to fear that the president himself could be battling the disease.

Although, denied by Lai Mohammad, premium Times, had reported that a number of Buhari's cabinets member are infected with virus.

According to the medium, infected officials include Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Permanent Secretary State House, Tijani umar; the president's  AIde-de-Camp, Yusuf dodo; Chief Security Officer, Aliyu Musa; and the president's Senior Special Assistance on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu.
