Vaccine to prevent cervical cancer

A new study has revealed that HPV vaccine can provide up to 90% prevention against cervical Cancer.

The vaccine which is used for HPV (acronym for Human Papillomavirus, a common group of viruses)  has now been discovered to mitigate cervical cancer's development.

Cervical cancer is a popular killer among women with over 300,000 women lost to the diseases annually worldwide.

According to the studies, the vaccine which is already confirm to protect recipient against HPV for at least 10 years, is now discovered to prevent cervical cancer up to 90%.

Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by viruses, and the hope is vaccination could almost eliminate the disease.

The researchers said the success meant those who were vaccinated may need far fewer cervical smear tests too.

Cervical cancer, known for its potent, is the fourth most common killer of women in the world after lung, breast and pancreatic cancers.

The discovery will be a great news for low and middle incomes countries where the disease is prevalent and less managed.

More than 100 countries have started using the vaccine as part of World Health Organization plans to get close to eliminating cervical cancer.

What is HPV?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States.

It is one of the most commonly sexually transmitted infection in the world contacted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex; and mother to baby by pregnancy, labor, or nursing.

While HPV is not curable, some are preventable through vaccination.
