Man with breast cancer advises men against the disease

Mark James, the man who together with his wife had breast cancer has advised men of possibility of having the women's killer disease.

Mark James together with his wife, Pat James were luckily diagnosed with the disease at an early stage which had enabled them to successfully overcome it.

Mark James, 79, from Porthcawl in Bridgend county, England discovered he had breast cancer four years ago after he and his wife Pat noticed slight changes to his nipple.

According to BBC, Pat, 77, had dealt with a diagnosis decades earlier, after noticing a "pinprick" sensation and going to the doctor.

Speaking during Breast Cancer Awareness Week, Mark said part of the problem was "men don't use the word breasts in respect to themselves" and so don't always realise they can have the disease.

He and his wife therefore urged men to be aware of the symptoms noting that it is possible for men to have the disease.

Breast cancer is known to be common among women, however, it is possible for men to have this killer disease even though it is rare.

Breast cancer in men is a rare disease. Less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. In 2021, about 2,650 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease, and an estimated 530 men are expected to die from breast cancer. For men, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is about 1 in 833.
