Beware of Formalin in frozen foods, NAFDAC warns

The National Agency for Food and Drugs administration and Control, NAFDAC has warned Nigerians against frozen foods which may contain Formalin.

Formalin, known for its industrial use as disinfectant is a poisonous malodorous chemical used for preserving dead bodies in the morgue.

According to NAFDAC's spokesperson, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh who spoke with newsmen in Abuja, some poultry products' dealers use Formalin to preserve their products, especially turkeys and chickens.

He advised consumers to stay put with the consumption of local diary products rather than resorting to the consumption of Formalin laden smuggled frozen poultry products.

"NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians to this practice", he said.

"There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite Federal Government's ban." He added.

He claimed that apart from the inimical effect of patronising frozen chicken imported, it hampers our foreign exchange policy as it will continue to affect the country's foreign reserves.
