Key nutrients working in synergy to support brain development

Certain key nutrients like DHA, Lutein, Sphingomyelin, Choline and the likes have been shown to support and most times improve brain development and function.

Most of these nutrients are found in breast milks which makes it available to babies. They are also found in certain foods for consumption for adult.

Choline: Choline is nutrient similar to the B vitamins. It can be made in the liver. It is also found in foods such as meats, fish, nuts, beans, vegetables, and eggs. Choline is most commonly used for a build up of fat in the liver (hepatic steatosis) in people receiving nutrition through the vein.

Choline promote signal transmisson ability of the brain. Breast milk content is 160mg/L

Lutein Lutein, a good source of anti-inflammatory, is one of the various types of carotenoid, yellow to red pigments found widely in vegetables and other plants. Though lutein is considered a yellow pigment, it appears orange-red in high concentrations.

Lutein is considered a neuroprotective through its acts as an antioxidant. Breast milk average about 81mcg/L. The sources of lutein also include Spinach, swiss chard, kale, parsley, pistachios, and green peas are among others.

DHA: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential for brain development during pregnancy and early childhood. It is also linked to improved heart health, better vision, and reduced inflammatory response. It involves in neurogenesis.

Breast milk level of DHA ranges from 91 to 141.55mg/L.

Sphingomyelin: Sphingomyelin is a building block of myelin, the protective covering of nerve cells  that supports the efficient transportation of information throughout the brain . Breast milk content of Sphingomyelin is 82.7mg/L
