U.S records first incumbent lawmaker to die from Covid-19

The United States of America is currently mourning its first congressman to have been lost to the world deadly disease, Covid-19, after brief illness.

The Republican, Ron Wright, 67, who represented Texas in the House of Representatives prior to his death on Sunday, had also suffered from cancer in recent years.

He died on Sunday in a Dallas hospital, where he and his wife were taken after catching the virus.

Wright announced on January 21 that he had tested positive for the Covid-19 but was "experiencing minor symptoms."

"I feel okay and will continue working for the people of the 6th District from home this week," he said then.

He is not the first politician to have lost his life to the virus, as Luke Letlow, a House member-elect lost his life on December 29 to the disease, just days before 41-year-old Republican was to be sworn in.

Wright condition got worsen days after he announced his status, before he gave up the ghost, rightly beside his wife who was also down to the virus.

Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney expressed her condolences in a statement for her “friend & colleague."

“Ron’s commitment to public service, his tremendous work ethic & his commitment to conservative values inspired us all,” she wrote.
