Covid-19: Oxford to test the effect of the vaccines on children

The University of Oxford to test the effect on children, the Covid-19 vaccines  it created together with AstraZeneca.

The vaccine is primarily meant for the most vulnerable which include frontline healthcare workers and people from 65 years old.

However, a statement released by the university on Saturday has now revealed its plan to carry out a mid range trial to ascertain the effect on children between the ages of 6 and 17.

About 300 volunteers will be enrolled and first inoculations are expected this month, Oxford said.

According to the statement, 240 subjects will be given the vaccines while other will be controlled tests.

Andrew Pollard, professor of paediatric infection and immunity and chief investigator on the Oxford vaccine trial, reiterated the need to ascertain the effect of the vaccine on children should in case some may need vaccination despite little or no chance of them catching the virus.

"While most children are relatively unaffected by coronavirus and are unlikely to become unwell with the infection, it is important to establish the safety and immune response to the vaccine in children and young people as some children may benefit from vaccination," he said.
