U.K's death toll hit 100k as pressure mounts on Johnson Boris

The pressure on U.K prime minister, Boris Johnson mounts on as the country's Covid-19 death toll hits 100,000.

The country became the first in Europe to record over 100,000 deaths with almost 4 million confirmed cases.

The country against which some other countries have shut plights has a new variant which is believed to be more deadly and contagious than Covid-19.

The UK has the fifth-highest toll globally – after the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico – and reported a further 1,631 deaths and 20,089 new cases on Tuesday, with critics accusing the government of an apparent slow initial response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Speaking after the country's Covid-19 death toll was confirmed to have surpassed 100,000, Boris said, "I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost and, of course, as prime minister, I take full responsibility for everything that the government has done.

"What I can tell you is that we truly did everything we could, and continue to do everything we can, to minimise loss of life and to minimise suffering.

He has constantly come under criticisms for the government's slow response to the virus.

Opposition leader, Keir Starmer, who accused Johnson of being too slow to respond to the pandemic, saying the prime minister’s indecision had cost lives and worsened the economic effect.

This is happening despite the fact that the country has started vaccinating its citizens who are at least 70-year-old with over 6,853,320 people to have already received a first dose and 472,446 a second dose.

More death are expected, as the impact of the the vaccines may not be immediate.

"Unfortunately we’re going to see quite a lot more deaths over the next few weeks before the effects of the vaccines begin to be felt,” Chris Whitty, the UK’s chief medical officer said.
