New variant of Coronavirus may be more deadly, U.K's prime minister warns

Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom has claimed that early evidence suggests the variant of coronavirus that emerged in the UK may be more deadly.

Although, early evidence remain at the preliminary stage, they have shown that the new variant is easily transmissible and spread faster than other of its family.

The new and mutated version of the virus which has spread to over 50 countries was first discovered in September in Kent.

Speaking about the new virus, Boris Johnson said that the virus has more mortality than the fearsome Covid-19.

"In addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, the variant that was first identified in London and the south east, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality," he said.

He then admitted that the nation's National Health Service (NHS) is facing intense pressure from the rising cases arising from the new variant.

"It's largely the impact of this new variant that means the NHS is under such intense pressure," he added.

The second variant of the virus called B.1.1.7 was first discovered in London in September and has since then spread to over 50 countries  with Brazil being one of the countries seriously affected.
