Women more expose to bipolar disorder- psychiatrist.

A medical expert in neurocardiology and neuroscience, Dr Chidi Njemanze, says research on and trend of bipolar disorders shows that the ailments is common among women and exposes victim to sexual abuse and exploitation.

"Most female victims of long-term sexual abuse have bipolar disorder," Njemanze says

"They get easily lured into the situation, after which they feel ashamed to speak about it due to feeling of low self worth and hopelessness that comes with the illness." He added.

Bipolar disorder got more popularity when U.S rapper and presidential candidate,Kanye West, was diagnosed with the diseases.

Psychiatrists say many people who have the condition live in denial, despite being aware of their impaired mental state, they attribute it to spiritual spell than rather than medical abnormality.

Experts say the disorder can cause severe disruption to a person's life, effect of which  varies among individuals.

In an interview with Punchnews, a Nigerian neurocardiology and neurosciences, Dr. Chidi Njemanze, described bipolar disorder as 'a mental illness characterised by shift between two moods, during which a person goes from being energetic to low depressive mood.

According to him,the condition could be mild or extreme mood swings, was know as manic-depressive disorder and is caused by neurochemical transmitted imbalances in the brain.

Bipolar disorder

This is a brain condition characterised by unexplained rapid switch in moods from energetic and vigour to laxity and loss of interest.

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not known, but a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain structure and chemistry may play a role

Treatment can manage the condition but cannot be cured,which may last long or for lifetime.
