Although it is medically advised and good to consume a lot of water everyday especially as a routine in the morning before taking any other thing, excess of it could be detrimental to the health as well.

Consuming excess water could result in the dilution and reduction of sodium content in the body leading to Hyponatremia.

Hyponatrrmia, a lack of sodium in the body, can lead to various health issues, ranging from mild to severe - including confusion, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, seizures, coma, and even death.

Although, drinking water alone without other underlying condition may not be responsible to health issues, underlying conditions like too low sodium in the body, excess sodium(salt) consumption, problems with the organs that regulate body's fluid balance, sedentary lifestyle like sitting or standing for too long, among others.

Should You worry about too much water?

Drinking too much water is rarely a problem for healthy, well-nourished adults.

Sportmen/sportwomen occasionally may drink too much water in an attempt to prevent dehydration during long or intense exercise. When you drink too much water, your kidneys can't get rid of the excess water. The sodium content of your blood becomes diluted. This is called hyponatremia and it can be life-threatening.

How much water should I drink daily?

The Institute of Medicine has given guidelines for adequate water intake. They recommend that a healthy adult drink about 9–13 cups of fluids per day on average. It’s also important to remember that the food you eat, such as vegetables or fruit, also contains water.

In addition, the amount of water you need to drink can vary and should roughly equal the amount your kidneys release. Children and adolescents may have lower requirements than adults. Other factors to consider are: exerrcise,  environment,  weather, overall health, breastfeeding and pregnancy etc.

How do I know when to reduce water intake?

Most balanced liquid state would have your urine colourless or light yellow, and when you rarely feel thirsty.
