Covid-19: Travelling during Chrismas likely to push cases - Experts

The Chief Medical Director to the President of the United State of America, Dr Anthony Fauci has warned of possible surge in the Omicron variant of the covid-19 pandemic, even among the vaccinated if strict covid measures is not observed among travellers.



The directior who together with his team advises the US government as regards public health, especially the pandemic, said the pandemic was now overwhelming the world.

"There is no doubt about this, Omicron has an extraordinary capability of spreading," Dr Fauci told NBC during Sunday's Meet the Press programme.

"The difference between a vaccinated and boosted person who has an infection who has never been vaccinated - it's a major difference with regard to the risk of severity," he said.

He also lamented the effect a possible surge in the virus could have on the country's health system.

"Our hospitals, if things look like they're looking now, are going to be stressed," he added.

Chrismas is one of the most celebrated anniversaries in the country; travelling for reunion with family members, hanging out and shopping are among the major activicties observe during this time of the year.

Dr Fauci urges people to take precautions such as wearing face masks, social distancing and the unvaccinated to get vaccinated.

"The fully vaccinated are doing much better... the optimum protection is fully vaccinated plus a boost," he said.

The US whuch remains the most affected nation by covid-19 with over 800,000 death has recorded over 1000 cases of the new variant since the first case of the Omicron was discovered in South-Africa few months ago.

Currently, the Governments are ramping up their booster vaccination programmes after researchers said the additional shot could provide around 85% protection against severe illness.
