Mobile phone and brain cancer

Do mobile phones really cause brain cancer? This is a question that has left researchers baffled for sometime now.
It is a question any mobile phone user would wish to get answers to and researchers do offer some clues.

Mobile phones emit radiation use in search of signal for its to function properly especially during calls .
Cell phones give off a form of energy known as radio-frequency (RF)  waves.Cell phones send and receive signals to and from nearby cell towers(base station) using RF wave. This is a form of electromagnetic energy that falls between FM radio wave, microwave, heat and visible light,RF waves are form of non-ionising radiation. They don't have energy to cause cancer or directly damaging the DNA inside the cells.RF waves are different from stronger ionising  types of radiation such as X-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet(UV) light, which can break the chemical bonds in DNA.
What is ionising and non-ionising radiation?
Ionising radiation is style of radiation called 'high energy'. The high energy  is that which can affect our cells, including mutating DNA which can lead to cancer. It is capable of carrying enough energy to ionise or remove electrons from atom. They are different types of this energy which includes gamma ray,X-ray among others.
Non-ionising radiation is a specific type of radiation.Non-ionising radiation has less energy compare to ionising radiation, this means it doesn't  carry enough energy per quantum to ionise atom or molecule.Non-ionising radiation can not change our cells in the same way as ionising radiation.
In 2011,the international agency for research on cancer (IARC) classified mobile phone radiation as possible human carcinogen group 2B.
  The two studies that was carried out by IARC based on;
1)The Cerenat study, published in 2013,confirmed observation of INTERPHONE and Harrell studies and,
2) An animal study in 2015 showed cell phone radiation enhance the carcinogenic effect of  chemical.
The Harrell studies suggest a link between using mobile phone and a few specific  types of brain tumour, especially in chronic users.
The interphone study, which  included sample of 6000 people in 13 countries, largely found no link between mobiles phone user and brain tumour apart from about ten percent of those who used their phone the most-but this could be explained by problem with the study design.
Does this mean phones cause brain cancer?
There are still no good explanations or evidences so far that mobile phone could cause cancer. The radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation  they transmit is very weak, thus, they do not have enough energy to damage DNA, and cannot directly cause cancer.
Relationship of mobile phones and rate of brain cancer.
The use of mobile phone has skyrocket in recent years. If mobile phones increase the risk of brain cancer, more and more people should now be developing them.
But we haven't seen an increase in brain cancer rates to match the increase in mobile phone use
Most patients with brain tumours do not report high use of mobile phone.
Most studies do not show that brain tumour occur more often on the side of the head where people place their mobile phone. Although some studies have found a possible link. For example, research group in Sweden have reported an increased risk tumour on the side of the head where cell phone are placed, particularly with 10 years or more of usage.
The possible precautions
Despite the lack of any valid evidence showing the relationship between phone usage and brain tumour, it is however important to take some precautionary measures in order to be assure of hundred percent freedom from phone related ailments:

  • Use the speaker mode on the phone or hands-free device such as corded or cordless earpiece
  • Texting instead of talking on the phone may be another option to reduce your exposure.
  • Don't keep your mobile phone under the pillow you rest your head on.
  • Limit your cell phone use.
Allowing phone to display 'connected' or make sure your recipient has pick your call before placing phone on the side of the head to speak with recipient
It is advisable to follow the precautionary measures to prevent any mobile phone related health issues.
