COVID-19 may not have emanated from Wuhan

A Russian scientist has on Saturday revealed that a disease spreading from a particular place does not mean it has emanated from the area.

According to him, Wuhan’s Huanan seafood market may have made it possible for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) to spread, but it does not mean the virus originated there.

The expert, Vladimir Dedkov, who is also a member of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) expert team, was quoted as saying "There is no evidence that the virus originated there but hypothetically, there are all conditions for the spread of the virus there."

Speaking while visiting the city's Institute of Virology along with nine other WHO experts on Wednesday, he said, "Of course, it was important for our mission to visit this facility, talk to our colleagues and see how everything is organised there.

"The laboratory is perfectly equipped. It is hard for me to imagine that something could have leaked from there"

Wuhan has been believed to be the origin of the virus with many, especially the US believing the virus was premeditated by Chinese government which had tried to hide its spread but for some journalist who were later indicted.

The virus has so far ravaged the world with the United States of America being the most affected with over 26 million confirmed cases and almost 500 thousands deaths in the country.

Activities in China - wher the virus is believed to have originated - have returned to normal with little or not cases recorded in the past six months.
