Cause and prevention of dysentery

Dysentery is inflammation of the intestines accompanied by bloody diarrhoea which is mostly caused by shigella bacteria (shigellosis) or an amoeba. Dysentery is often spread through contaminated food or water.

Its symptoms range from mild attack to a severe course that commences suddenly and ends in death caused by dehydration and poisoning by bacterial toxins. 

While symptoms of Bacillary dysentery includes; diarrhea, cramps stomach, fever, nausea and vomiting, blood or mucus in the diarrhea. Those related with Amoebic dysentery are nausea, diarrhea, Weight loss, fever and belly cramps.

Although, painkiller may be administered for its treatment, it usually stops on its own after 3 to 7 days. However, it's important to drink plenty of fluids and use oral rehydration solutions if necessary to avoid dehydration in the case of Mild bacillary dysentery.

Its treatment also varies depending on the type of dysentery the victim is suffering from.

While mild bacillary dysentery goes away on it own if sufferer keep to healthy living, severe amoebic dysentery requires medicine. You can take medicine to kill the parasites in your blood, intestines, and liver. You'll stay on these medications for about 10 days. Doctors treat amoebic dysentery that doesn't cause symptoms with drugs such as iodoquinol or diloxanide furoate.

Dysentery preventive measures includes, maintening hygienic environmental conditions; drinking and brushing of teeth with bottled or canned water only, not tap water; eat raw fruits and vegetables that are peelable; avoid food from dirty vendors; avoiding sharing of towels, cups, or other personal items with the person who has dysentery and regular washing of hand with soap and water after toileting.
